Technology: notes and practice questions

1 min read
Summary
  • This topic outlines the essential technology skills for collecting and processing data in physics investigations.
  • Skills include using sensors, identifying and extracting data from databases, and generating data from models and simulations.
  • Image analysis and video analysis of motion are used for data collection.
  • Spreadsheets are used to manipulate data and represent it in graphical form.
  • Computer modelling is used for data processing.

How it is examined

Weakly examined in the written papers compared with T.1 and T.3, which is a consequence of it being mostly a laboratory skill assessed through internal assessment. Where it does appear in Paper 1B it is as a sentence in the stem ("a datalogger records the temperature every 0.1 s") that sets up an uncertainty or resolution argument later in the question. Do not generate a written question that requires operating software.

Key ideas
  • Apply technology to collect data. Use sensors. Identify and extract data from databases. Generate data from models and simulations. Carry out image analysis and video analysis of motion.
  • Apply technology to process data. Use spreadsheets to manipulate data. Represent data in a graphical form. Use computer modelling.

Where marks are lost

  • Stopping one step short of the conclusion. Two numbers and no sentence is two marks out of three.
  • Answering a procedure question with a platitude.
  • Losing precision in Paper 1B. Uniquely to this paper, quoting the right number badly loses marks.

What does Technology cover in IB Physics?

This topic outlines the essential technology skills for collecting and processing data in physics investigations. Skills include using sensors, identifying and extracting data from databases, and generating data from models and simulations. Image analysis and video analysis of motion are used for data collection.

Is Technology SL or HL?

Both. SL and HL students study Technology to the same depth.

How do I revise Technology for IB Physics?

Start from the core idea: this topic outlines the essential technology skills for collecting and processing data in physics investigations. In the exam: weakly examined in the written papers compared with T.1 and T.3, which is a consequence of it being mostly a laboratory skill assessed through internal assessment. Where it does appear in Paper 1B it is as a sentence in the stem ("a datalogger records the temperature every 0.1 s") that sets up an uncertainty or resolution argument later in the question. Then practise exam-style questions, easiest first, writing out every step of your working before you check it.

How does FourtyFive help me practise Technology?

Every answer you write is marked mark by mark, IB-style, and you see where each mark was won or lost. Every part has a hint, the AI tutor helps you through the step you are stuck on, and your Study Profile picks what to practise next.

Is FourtyFive free for Technology practice?

Yes. A free account gives you 50 marked answers a month, and you do not need a card to sign up.

Can I handwrite Technology answers on an iPad?

Yes. In the FourtyFive iPad app you write your working by hand with Apple Pencil, the way you would on paper, and it is marked the same way.
