Classification of matter: notes and practice questions
Structure 3 is periodicity and organic classification in one chapter: the periodic table's trends (Structure 3.1) and every organic functional group, formula type, and spectroscopic technique (Structure 3.2). It carries the most HL-only teaching hours per subtopic of any chapter (31 hours across 2 subtopics at HL), most of it spectroscopy and stereoisomerism.
Subtopics
- Practice questionsThe periodic table: Classification of elements
This topic covers the organization of elements in the periodic table and the periodic trends in their properties. The periodic table classifies elements into periods, groups, and s, p, d, f blocks, identifying metals, metalloids, and non-metals.
- Practice questionsFunctional groups: Classification of organic compounds
This topic covers representing, classifying, and naming organic compounds based on their structure and functional groups. Organic compounds use empirical, molecular, structural (full/condensed), stereochemical, and skeletal formulas.
- Practice questionsThe periodic table: Classification of elementsHL only
This topic covers advanced aspects of periodic trends and transition element chemistry. Discontinuities in first ionization energy across a period provide evidence for energy sublevels, explained by the energy of the electron removed.
- Practice questionsFunctional groups: Classification of organic compoundsHL only
This topic extends the understanding of organic functional groups to include stereoisomerism and advanced spectroscopic analysis. Understand the formation of dipeptides from amino acids.
