Number & Algebra: notes and practice questions
Standard form, arithmetic and geometric sequences and series with their financial applications (compound interest, amortization, annuities), and exponent and logarithm laws. The smallest SL topic by hours, and five of its eight SL subtopics are shared word for word with AA. HL adds complex numbers in Cartesian, polar and exponential form, and matrices through to eigenvalues and eigenvectors, none of which SL sees at all. The hard parts are the log-law manipulations feeding into topic 2's linearisation work, and at HL, converting fluidly between the three complex number forms.
Subtopics
- Practice questionsScientific notation
Scientific notation expresses numbers as . Conditions for scientific notation: and .
- Practice questionsArithmetic Sequences & Series (+Sigma notation)
A sequence is an ordered set of numbers; terms are denoted by . A series is the sum of terms in a sequence; the sum of the first terms is .
- Practice questionsGeometric Sequences & Series
A geometric sequence has a common ratio, , between consecutive terms (). Sequence behavior: increasing if , decreasing if , alternating if .
- Practice questionsFinancial Applications (compound interest, annual depreciation)
Simple Interest: Interest only on initial investment (principal). Compound Interest: Interest on initial investment and accumulated interest; exponential growth.
- Practice questionsExponents & Logarithms (ln, log_10, integer exponents)
An exponent is a power a base is raised to. A logarithm is its inverse, calculating the power. Fundamental relationship: (where ).
- Practice questionsApproximation of decimal places, significant figures; Upper & Lower bounds, Percentage error, estimation
IB exam default accuracy: 3 significant figures (3 s.f.) for non-exact answers. Use exact values (e.g., , ) in working to avoid rounding errors.
- Practice questionsAmortisation and annuities (using GDC)
Amortisation: Process of repaying a loan over a fixed period. Annuity: Fixed sum of money paid at specified intervals from an initial investment.
- Practice questionsSolving system of linear equations and polynomial equations (using GDC)
A linear equation is of degree 1, generally written as . A system of linear equations is a set of two or more linear equations sharing variables.
- Practice questionsLaws of logarithms (adding/product, subtracting/quotient, distribution)HL only
A logarithm is the inverse of an exponent: (where ). Common logarithm (base 10): .
- Practice questionsSimplifying expressions (with rational exponents)HL only
Exponent (Index): A power a base is raised to. Rational Exponent: A fractional power where the denominator is a root and the numerator is a standard power.
- Practice questionsSum of infinite geometric sequencesHL only
A geometric sequence is divergent if terms increase/decrease away from zero; sum approaches . A geometric sequence is convergent if terms get closer to zero; sum approaches a finite limit.
- Practice questionsComplex numbers (cartesian form, complex plane, imaginary solutions to quadratic equations)HL only
The imaginary unit: , so . Square roots of negative numbers: for .
- Practice questionsPolar, exponential form of Complex numbers (conversions, arithmetics), combining phase shifts, drawing on argand diagramHL only
Modulus of is , representing distance from origin. Argument of is , the angle with the positive real axis (counter-clockwise, radians, usually or ).
